From Fighter Pilot to Defense Minister: The Rise of Prince Khalid bin Salman
In short: Born in 1988, Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud has transitioned from an F-15S pilot in the Royal Saudi Air Force to the Kingdom's Minister of Defense. His career spans high-stakes diplomacy in Washington, military leadership, and a central role in the ambitious localization of Saudi Arabia's defense industry.
Prince Khalid bin Salman Al Saud, the tenth child of King Salman, began his professional life in the cockpit. After graduating from the King Faisal Air Academy, he trained at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi and Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. As a pilot with the 92nd Squadron, he accumulated nearly 1,000 flying hours, participating in missions against the Islamic State and operations in Yemen. A back injury eventually ended his active flying career, leading him to transition into civilian advisory roles within the Ministry of Defense.
In 2017, Prince Khalid was appointed as the Saudi Ambassador to the United States. His tenure in Washington was marked by efforts to strengthen U.S.-Saudi relations, including media appearances and op-eds detailing the Kingdom's internal transformations. However, this period also involved significant controversy surrounding the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. While Prince Khalid publicly denied Saudi involvement in the disappearance, leaked reports and allegations from intelligence sources later suggested he had directed Khashoggi to the consulate in Istanbul, a claim that remains a point of intense scrutiny and historical debate.
Since returning to Saudi Arabia, Prince Khalid has ascended to the role of Minister of Defense, an appointment confirmed on 27 September 2022. His current portfolio is expansive, encompassing the modernization of military education through the new National Defence University and the strategic oversight of the Saudi Arabian Military Industries. As Chairman of the Board for the latter, he is tasked with a key Vision 2030 objective: localizing half of the nation's military spending. His recent diplomatic activities, including meetings with U.S. officials and the Supreme Leader of Iran, underscore his central position in the Kingdom's evolving regional and global security strategy.
