In short: Before he was a National League MVP, Kevin Mitchell was a journeyman with a flair for the impossible. Known for his raw power and defensive instincts, he famously snared a fly ball barehanded in 1989. Yet, his career was as volatile as his talent was undeniable, spanning eight different major league teams.

Born in San Diego in 1962, Kevin Mitchell entered professional baseball as an undrafted free agent signed by the New York Mets. His early years were marked by a rapid ascent, culminating in a 1986 World Series title. Teammate Gary Carter nicknamed him World, a nod to his versatility in playing both the infield and outfield. Mitchell’s physical approach to the game was unconventional; he famously claimed he never wore a protective cup, suggesting it hindered his mobility—a trait he credited for his legendary 1989 barehanded catch of an Ozzie Smith fly ball.

The 1989 season represented the peak of Mitchell's career. After moving to the outfield for the San Francisco Giants, he led the National League in home runs with 47 and runs batted in with 125. His performance earned him the league's Most Valuable Player award, the first for a Giant in two decades. He dominated several offensive categories, including slugging percentage and total bases, while helping lead his team to the World Series. Despite this brilliance, his career was frequently interrupted by weight struggles, injuries, and clubhouse confrontations, including a physical altercation with teammate Chad Curtis in 1997.

Mitchell’s professional journey took him across the globe, including a stint in Japan with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks, where he became the best-compensated athlete in the history of the league at that time. His post-MLB life remained equally turbulent, featuring various legal issues and run-ins with team management. Over a 13-season major league career, Mitchell finished with 234 home runs and a .284 batting average. Today, he remains active in the sport, playing for the San Diego Black Sox in the San Diego Adult Baseball League.
