In short: In August 1993, a skilled hiking group vanished into the Khamar-Daban range. When the sole survivor was finally found, she described a scene of horrific, inexplicable symptoms: convulsing, bleeding from the eyes, and sudden madness. To this day, the true cause of this tragedy remains a subject of intense debate.

The incident, often called "Buryatia's Dyatlov Pass," involved a seven-person group led by experienced instructor Lyudmila Korovina. While the group made good progress early on, an unexpected rainstorm on August 4 forced them to camp in an exposed location. By August 5, the group's situation turned fatal. According to survivor Valentina Utochenko, the hikers began exhibiting terrifying symptoms, including foaming at the mouth and convulsions, before dying in rapid succession.

An autopsy conducted in Ulan-Ude provided a stark, yet contested, official conclusion. Investigators determined that five of the hikers died from hypothermia, while Korovina died from a heart attack. The report also noted protein deficiency due to malnutrition as a contributing factor. The presence of bruised lungs and the fact that some victims were found partially undressed led to various theories, including paradoxical undressing caused by extreme cold.

The mystery persists because the symptoms described by Utochenko do not perfectly align with a single cause. While some suggest pulmonary edema or even accidental mushroom poisoning, others have pointed toward more sinister possibilities. Theories have ranged from the effects of infrasound to the accidental ingestion of toxins from nearby waste dumping grounds. Even the possibility of nerve agent exposure has been raised, given that Soviet-era Novichok testing was reported in the region, though the specific symptom of bleeding from the eyes is not a recognized effect of such agents.

The complexity of the case is compounded by the trauma experienced by the survivor and the delay in the official search, which did not begin until August 24, nearly three weeks after the group's planned rendezvous.
