In short: Killybegs is known as the heart of Ireland's pelagic fishing industry, but its legacy extends far beyond the sea. This County Donegal town once operated the world's largest carpet loom, crafting hand-knotted masterpieces that now grace the floors of the Vatican, Buckingham Palace, and the White House.

Located on the south coast of County Donegal, Killybegs has long been defined by its natural deepwater harbour. While modern infrastructure—including a pier completed in 2004 that reaches depths of 12 metres during low spring tides—supports a fleet of large pelagic trawlers, the town's history is equally rooted in craftsmanship. The Donegal Carpet Factory, which operated until 2003, produced hand-knotted rugs in the Turkish style. These carpets, known as Donegals, became prestigious fixtures in state buildings worldwide, from 10 Downing Street to the official residence of the Irish President, Áras an Uachtaráin.

The town's industrial identity has faced significant shifts. The fishing sector, which processes species like mackerel and herring for export to Africa and the Middle East, has struggled since 2005 due to strict European Union regulations and changing migration patterns of fish shoals. These economic pressures led to job losses in local processing plants. Despite these challenges, Killybegs remains a vital hub, diversifying its maritime role to include servicing offshore energy rigs and importing wind turbines, while its former carpet factory now serves as a heritage centre.

Beyond industry, Killybegs is a place of deep historical layers. The area contains at least six Neolithic court cairns, including the 130-foot-long Shalwy site. Its maritime significance dates back centuries; in 1588, the Spanish vessel La Girona sought refuge in the harbour during the Spanish Armada. Today, the town balances this heritage with modern education, hosting the only dedicated tourism institute in Ireland. Whether through the annual Blessing of the Boats festival or the ongoing training of the Killybegs Rowing Club, the community maintains a strong connection to its coastal origins.
