The Kia Sonet is a global chameleon tailored to local tax and space laws
In short: Designed as a subcompact crossover for emerging markets, the Kia Sonet adapts its physical footprint and features to suit diverse regional regulations. From clever three-row seating in Indonesia to tax-efficient dimensions in India, this vehicle demonstrates how manufacturers engineer a single platform to navigate vastly different consumer needs across continents.
Launched in 2020, the Kia Sonet serves as a strategic model for Kia in markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Its engineering is highly responsive to local environments. In India, for instance, the vehicle is built to a length of 3,995 mm to qualify for specific tax incentives reserved for cars under four meters. Conversely, export versions feature extended bumpers that push the length to 4,120 mm, catering to international preferences for a larger aesthetic.
The vehicle's versatility extends to interior configurations and powertrain options. In Indonesia, Kia introduced a unique three-row variant known as the Sonet 7 in 2021, which utilized a roof-mounted air circulator to maintain comfort for rear passengers, though this design effectively sacrificed boot space when the third row was in use. Powertrain choices are equally varied; depending on the market, buyers might find a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a 1.2-litre MPi petrol engine, or a 1.5-litre CRDi diesel engine, paired with various manual or automatic transmissions.
Constant evolution defines the Sonet's lifecycle. A significant facelift unveiled in late 2023 introduced redesigned lighting and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, reflecting Kia's commitment to updating the model's appeal. Production has become increasingly global, with the Yueda Kia joint venture in China supplying units to markets like Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Despite its commercial success—surpassing 450,000 units sold by September 2024—the car has yet to receive an official safety assessment from organizations like Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP, leaving its formal safety rating unverified by independent testers.
