From the Royal Canadian Navy to global pop stardom: the rise of Kiesza
In short: Before topping the UK charts, Calgary-born Kiesa Rae Ellestad was a naval communicator teaching herself guitar during crew singalongs. Her path from ballet-trained dancer to a genre-blurring songwriter is defined by unexpected pivots, including a recovery from a traumatic brain injury that forced her into total darkness for six months.
Born in 1989, Kiesza initially pursued a career in dance, training in jazz, tap, and ballet until a knee injury at age 15 redirected her focus toward music. Her early years were marked by diverse experiences, including a stint in the Royal Canadian Navy and studies at Selkirk College and Berklee College of Music. Initially a folk singer, she transitioned to an uptempo, disco-infused sound after moving to New York City in 2010 to collaborate with producer Rami Samir Afuni.
Her 2014 breakout single, "Hideaway," became a cultural phenomenon, famously captured in a single continuous take through a Brooklyn street. The track reached number one on the UK Singles Chart despite the artist filming the video while nursing a broken rib. This success propelled her into high-profile collaborations with artists like Skrillex, Diplo, and Duran Duran, while her songwriting credits expanded to include stars such as Rihanna and Kylie Minogue.
Kiesza's career faced a significant interruption in 2017 following a severe car accident in Toronto. The resulting traumatic brain injury necessitated a two-year hiatus, during which she spent months in a darkened room to facilitate her recovery. She eventually returned to the stage in 2019 and released her second album, Crave, in 2020. Her resilience continued with the 2024 EP Dancing and Crying: Vol. 1, which yielded her first chart-topping success on the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.
Beyond music, Kiesza has explored fashion, launching her own "SteamPop" aesthetic and collaborating on design lines like Select Surrealism. Her work remains deeply personal, with songs often reflecting significant life events, such as the loss of her close friend Alicia Lemke. From performing for 30,000 people at London's Trafalgar Square in 2010 to touring North America in 2025, her trajectory remains a testament to creative evolution through adversity.
