In short: Formed in 1999, Killswitch Engage became a defining force in metalcore. Their journey is marked by significant lineup shifts, including the departure and return of founding vocalist Jesse Leach. Through commercial success and Grammy nominations, the band has navigated personal struggles and health challenges to remain a staple of the genre.

The band emerged from the ashes of Massachusetts metalcore acts Overcast and Aftershock in 1999. Their name, inspired by an episode of The X-Files, reflects the industrial and heavy influences that shaped their early sound. After releasing a self-titled debut in 2000, they signed with Roadrunner Records, setting the stage for their breakthrough with the 2004 album The End of Heartache. This record, which reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 and earned gold certification, established them as a household name, bolstered by the powerful vocal contributions of Howard Jones.

Jones joined in 2002 after founding vocalist Jesse Leach departed due to personal struggles with depression and vocal performance issues. Jones brought a new dynamic to the group, leading them through a period of sustained growth and high-profile tours, including Ozzfest and the Taste of Chaos tour. However, in 2012, Jones stepped down to manage his type 2 diabetes, which had been exacerbated by the demands of constant touring. His exit paved the way for Leach’s return, a transition that revitalized the band’s creative process and led to the critically acclaimed album Disarm the Descent in 2013.

The band’s resilience is evident in how they have handled adversity, from Adam Dutkiewicz’s recurring back surgeries to Leach’s own vocal cord surgery in 2018. Despite these hurdles, they have consistently evolved, moving from Roadrunner Records to Metal Blade Records in 2018. Their discography, including the platinum-certified As Daylight Dies and the ambitious Incarnate, showcases a commitment to musical growth. By maintaining a balance between technical brutality and melodic accessibility, Killswitch Engage has secured its legacy as a pivotal act in modern metal, with their ninth studio album, This Consequence, arriving in early 2025.
