In short: In March 1991, 15-year-old Latasha Harlins walked into a Los Angeles market to buy orange juice. She was shot in the back of the head by the store owner as she turned to leave. This single, senseless act of violence became a catalyst for the massive 1992 Los Angeles riots.

The incident occurred on March 16, 1991, at the Empire Liquor Market in the Vermont Vista neighborhood. Surveillance footage revealed that Harlins, a ninth-grade student at Westchester High School, had no intent to steal. Despite holding $2.00 in her hand, she was accused of shoplifting by the owner, Soon Ja Du. After a brief physical struggle in which Harlins struck Du to free herself from a grip on her sweater, Harlins placed the juice on the counter and turned to exit. Du then fired a .38-caliber revolver, killing the teenager instantly.

The legal outcome ignited intense public outrage. Although a grand jury initially indicted Du for first-degree murder, the jury ultimately found her guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Judge Joyce Karlin handed down a light sentence: a suspended 10-year prison term, 5 years of probation, 400 hours of community service, and a $500 fine. Occurring only 13 days after the televised police assault on Rodney King, this verdict was viewed as a failure of justice that helped ignite the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

The catastrophe stemmed from intense local friction. The market had a reputation for hostility toward local Black residents and employees. While the Du family claimed they faced constant terrorization from local gangs, community members argued the shooting was a symptom of systemic issues regarding racial intolerance and gun control. For Harlins, a student with dreams of attending the University of Southern California to become a lawyer, the incident ended a life marked by significant personal resilience.
