The most hyped NFL running back of 1995 whose career was derailed by injury
In short: Selected first overall in the 1995 NFL draft, Ki-Jana Carter arrived in the league with record-breaking expectations. Yet, a devastating knee injury in his first preseason game triggered a cascade of physical setbacks. Despite his immense collegiate promise, his professional journey became a cautionary tale of potential interrupted by misfortune.
Born Kenneth Leonard Carter in 1973, the future star earned the nickname Ki-Jana from the film Shaft in Africa. At Penn State, he became a collegiate sensation under coach Joe Paterno. During the 1994 season, he helped lead the Nittany Lions to an undefeated 12–0 record. His performance was stellar: he rushed for 2,829 yards over three seasons, finished second in Heisman Trophy voting, and was named co-MVP of the 1995 Rose Bowl. Paterno, breaking his own tradition, encouraged Carter to leave school early for the NFL draft.
The Cincinnati Bengals traded up to secure Carter with the first overall pick in 1995, signing him to a then-record $19.2 million rookie contract. However, his professional trajectory shifted instantly. During his first preseason game, he tore a knee ligament on his third carry, forcing him to miss the entire 1995 season. This injury marked the beginning of a difficult tenure in Cincinnati, where he struggled with further health issues, including a torn rotator cuff in 1997, a broken wrist in 1998, and a dislocated kneecap in 1999.
Carter’s NFL career spanned eight seasons, though he played in only 59 games, starting 14. After his time with the Bengals, he had brief stints with the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints. Despite the physical toll, he remains the most recent running back selected first overall in the NFL draft. Since retiring from professional football, Carter has transitioned into business, founding the marketing firm Byoglobe in 2008 and serving as its CEO. In 2026, he received recognition for his collegiate achievements with an induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
