A romance where the past is lost to total amnesia
In short: In the dense labyrinth of the Kowloon Walled City, Reiko Kujirai is in love with Hajime Kudou. There is just one problem: she has no memory of their former engagement, and he refuses to tell her the truth.
Jun Mayuzuki's manga series, Kowloon Generic Romance, explores a complex relationship set within the historic Kowloon Walled City. The story centers on Reiko Kujirai, a 32-year-old real estate agent who suffers from complete memory loss regarding her past. This amnesia has erased her previous engagement to her current coworker, Hajime Kudou, a 34-year-old agent who transferred from a Japanese branch to the Kowloon office. The setting is a dense urban enclave spanning only 6.5 acres. This labyrinthine environment houses more than 33,000 residents.
The dynamic between the two is defined by a stark imbalance of information. While Reiko is deeply in love with Hajime, he does not reciprocate her feelings. Instead of revealing their shared history, Hajime often taunts her about her affection, maintaining a professional yet contentious rapport. Adding to this friction is Kujirai B, a late woman who looked remarkably like Reiko and worked as Hajime's superior at Wong Loi Realty Company. Their interactions often involve sharing lunch together despite their friction. This tension is exacerbated by Hajime's tendency to tease her.
The series, which was serialized in Weekly Young Jump from November 2019 to April 2026, has expanded into multiple media formats. An anime adaptation produced by Arvo Animation aired between April and June 2025, and a live-action film by Robot Communications premiered in Japanese theaters in August 2025. The manga achieved great popularity, reaching a circulation exceeding 1.2 million copies by December 2024. The original manga was published by Shueisha. It has also received various award nominations, including at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
