The branching paths of a romance that spans three years and multiple lives
In short: In the 2001 visual novel Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, a single accident transforms a high school romance into a complex drama of memory and choice. Players navigate a branching narrative where decisions dictate whether characters find happiness or face tragic, alternate endings across several chapters.
Developed by Âge and released for Windows on August 3, 2001, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (translated as 'The Eternity You Desire') is a romance visual novel centered on protagonist Takayuki Narumi. The narrative is structured into distinct chapters: the first takes place between July 6 and August 20, 1998, serving as a prologue, while the second is set three years later. This time jump is driven by a pivotal accident involving Haruka Suzumiya, who falls into a coma and later awakens with anterograde amnesia. The protagonist's life is further complicated when he begins working at a restaurant owned by the Sky Temple financial group. This setting becomes a central hub for character interactions following his academic decline after the accident.
The gameplay mechanism relies on reading text and viewing character sprites or CG artwork, with the player making critical choices that influence the plot's direction. The original Windows edition features 14 endings, while the DVD version includes two additional bad endings. The story's tension is heightened by the fact that Haruka's family and Takayuki initially conceal the three-year gap from her due to her delicate psyche. Depending on the player's specific decisions, the narrative can progress toward eight different heroine-specific plot lines. These paths are explored through multiple playthroughs to uncover every possible outcome.
The franchise expanded significantly through various media. An anime television series aired between October 2003 and January 2004, licensed in North America by Funimation as 'Rumbling Hearts.' The game's complexity is further explored in the Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: Latest Edition for Windows Vista, which introduced a third chapter. While the original game contained adult content, consumer ports for consoles like the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 were released without it. The series also features a four-episode OVA titled Next Season, which explores an alternate conclusion involving Haruka. Additionally, a special fan disc provides a way for players to alter events during the initial prologue.
