In short: Between 2019 and 2024, Marvel Comics transformed the X-Men from traditional superheroes into a global power. By establishing the island of Krakoa as a sovereign nation and mastering resurrection, the mutants fundamentally altered their status quo, sparking complex geopolitical conflicts and challenging the very nature of life and death.

The Krakoan Age began with Jonathan Hickman’s 2019 limited series House of X and Powers of X, which replaced the traditional X-Men mission with the creation of a mutant nation-state. This era spanned over 500 issues across more than 80 series, moving away from the standard superhero tropes to explore the logistics of a new culture. The island of Krakoa served as the foundation, utilizing an interconnected hive mind and gateways to link environments ranging from the Moon to Mars. This sovereignty was bolstered by the export of miracle pharmaceuticals, which provided leverage on the international stage.

Central to this era was the development of resurrection protocols, managed by a group known as The Five. By combining genetic databases with Professor X’s telepathic backups, mutants achieved effective immortality. This process was later expanded by the Scarlet Witch, who created a pocket dimension called the Waiting Room, allowing for the resurrection of millions of mutants, including those who had never manifested their powers. While this technology secured mutantkind's future, it also introduced new existential crises and served as a metatextual commentary on the frequent deaths and returns common in superhero comics.

The era was defined by a collaborative 'power circuit' of writers and artists, including Gerry Duggan, Kieron Gillen, and Al Ewing, who expanded upon Hickman’s initial vision. The narrative faced constant threats from the human supremacist organization Orchis and the god-like Dominion entities, which exist beyond space and time. The age concluded in June 2024, following a final conflict that saw the surviving mutant population retreat into the White Hot Room. This period remains notable for its innovative use of data pages—designed by Tom Mullers—to provide in-universe exposition and recontextualize the complex, evolving status quo of the mutant race.
