From manga pages to virtual reality: the expansive world of Laid-Back Camp
In short: What began as a manga series about solo camping has evolved into a massive multimedia franchise. From anime seasons and feature films to video games and live-action dramas, the adventures of Rin Shima and her friends have captured audiences across multiple formats and platforms.
Created by the illustrator Afro, Laid-Back Camp (Yurukyan) first appeared in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine. The series began its serialization in July 2015 and continued through February 2019 before moving to the Comic Fuz app. The manga has since been collected into nineteen tankōbon volumes and is licensed in North America by Yen Press. The original publication was eventually transferred to the publisher's digital platform. This collection is currently available in nineteen volumes.
The story follows Rin Shima, a reserved high school student who prefers solo camping—often during the colder autumn and winter months—and Nadeshiko Kagamihara, a lively student who discovers a passion for the outdoors after a cycling trip to see Mount Fuji. The two are joined by classmates Chiaki Ōgaki and Aoi Inuyama, forming the core of the series' social circle. The group includes Chiaki Ōgaki and Aoi Inuyama. These classmates enjoy traveling around Japan together.
The franchise's reach extends far beyond the original manga. An anime television series aired on AT-X from January to March 2018, followed by a short spin-off, Room Camp, in early 2020. The series has seen multiple anime seasons, including a third season in 2024 and a fourth scheduled for 2027. Other adaptations include a live-action drama series, a virtual reality video game released in March 2021, and a visual novel from MAGES released in November 2021. A live-action drama also aired in Japan. Additionally, a video game was launched in early 2021.
