From rancher to governor: the unexpected political ascent of South Dakota's Larry Rhoden
In short: Larry Rhoden, a lifelong rancher and veteran of the South Dakota legislature, ascended to the governorship in January 2025 following the resignation of Kristi Noem. His career, marked by a focus on limited government and conservative principles, recently culminated in a historic primary runoff victory that solidified his path forward.
Born in 1959 and raised on a farm, Larry Rhoden’s path to the executive office was built through decades of state-level service. Before becoming the 34th governor of South Dakota, Rhoden served in the state House of Representatives starting in 2001, where he eventually became majority leader, and later served in the state Senate. His legislative record reflects a staunch commitment to conservative ideology, including sponsorship of measures asserting that the Founding Fathers intended for citizens to hold authority over firearm ownership. He has consistently campaigned against career politicians, activist judges, and immigration amnesty, while pledging to oppose tax increases.
Rhoden’s transition to the governorship occurred mid-term when President-elect Donald Trump nominated then-Governor Kristi Noem for Secretary of Homeland Security. Upon her confirmation in January 2025, Rhoden was sworn in by Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen. His early tenure has been defined by both administrative duties and crisis management, including coordinating with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to restore the Mount Rushmore fireworks display and managing the aftermath of severe summer storms in 2026, for which he sought federal disaster assistance.
The 2026 election cycle presented a significant challenge to his incumbency. In a crowded Republican primary field that included Jon Hansen, Toby Doeden, and Dusty Johnson, Rhoden failed to secure the 35% threshold required to avoid a runoff. This led to a historic runoff election—the first in the state since the provision was established in 1986—where Rhoden decisively defeated Doeden with 70.8% of the vote. Outside of his political life, Rhoden maintains his roots in Union Center, South Dakota, where he operates a cow-calf ranch and a custom welding business with his wife, Sandy.
