A record-breaking NFL career overshadowed by a volatile legacy of violence and conspiracy
In short: Larry Johnson was once the NFL's highest-paid running back, setting a single-season record for carries in 2006. Yet, his professional trajectory was marked by frequent suspensions, multiple arrests for assaulting women, and a post-career descent into spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories and claims that the NFL scripts its own games.
Larry Johnson Jr. emerged from Penn State as a decorated athlete, rushing for 2,087 yards in 2002. Selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2003 NFL draft, he eventually became a featured back, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, he signed a six-year, $45 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in the league at the time. However, his tenure in Kansas City was plagued by conflict with coaching staff and repeated disciplinary issues.
Johnson's career was punctuated by at least six arrests since 2003, five of which involved assault charges against women. During his time with the Chiefs, he faced multiple suspensions for violating team rules and the league's personal conduct policy. His departure from the team in 2009 followed a series of controversial social media posts that included derogatory language toward his coach and fans. He subsequently had brief stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, and Miami Dolphins before exiting the league.
In his post-football life, Johnson has claimed to suffer from symptoms consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, including memory loss and mood swings, noting that he cannot recall playing two full seasons. Since 2020, he has gained notoriety for promoting antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories on social media, including allegations of occult influence in professional sports. Despite his athletic achievements, his legacy remains deeply entangled with his history of criminal behavior and his public embrace of extremist rhetoric.
