A Tennessee mother finds her footing after thirty-three years of marriage in Leanne
In short: When a long-term marriage ends abruptly, life in Knoxville takes an unexpected turn. The sitcom Leanne, created by Leanne Morgan, Chuck Lorre, and Susan McMartin, follows a woman navigating the aftermath of her husband's departure. It is a story of family dynamics, new beginnings, and the complexities of starting over.
The series centers on Leanne, a wife and mother whose life is upended when her husband of 33 years, Bill, leaves her for his younger mistress, Faye. Bill, a businessman who owns three RV Emporiums, leaves Leanne to manage the fallout alongside their two adult children, Tyler and Josie. The narrative is deeply rooted in the family's Knoxville, Tennessee setting, incorporating the presence of Leanne's parents, Mama Margaret and Daddy John, as well as her twice-divorced sister, Carol.
Development of the show began in April 2024, when Netflix ordered 16 episodes of the multi-cam sitcom. The series, produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, officially received its title in May 2025. The first season premiered in its entirety on July 31, 2025, featuring a cast that includes Kristen Johnston, Celia Weston, and Ryan Stiles. The show's reception has been generally favorable, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 71% approval rating from critics who noted its classic sitcom feel.
The show expanded its scope in its second season, which premiered on August 27, 2026, with 10 episodes. This season introduced new plot threads, including Carol's relationship with a plumber named Dylan—who is later revealed to be a wanted criminal—and Leanne's burgeoning romance with FBI agent Andrew. By blending domestic comedy with these heightened narrative stakes, the series attempts to balance the comfort of traditional sitcom tropes with the evolving lives of its characters, earning a score of 62 out of 100 on Metacritic.
