Can a fresh start in a remote town truly erase a painful past?
In short: Melinda Monroe leaves her life in Los Angeles for a nursing role in the secluded town of Virgin River. She seeks solace and a new beginning, but discovers that small-town existence is far more complex than she imagined. Her journey intertwines with local residents, including a former Marine battling personal demons.
Developed by Sue Tenney for Netflix, this romantic drama is based on the book series written by Robyn Carr. The narrative centers on Melinda Monroe, a midwife and nurse practitioner who relocates to the Northern California wilderness to escape traumatic memories. Upon arrival, she finds herself navigating the intricacies of a tight-knit community and developing a significant relationship with Jack Sheridan, a local bar owner and veteran who struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The series, produced by Reel World Management, is primarily filmed in British Columbia, Canada. Since its debut on December 6, 2019, the show has expanded its cast to include a wide array of townspeople, from the mayor, Hope McCrea, to the local physician, Vernon Mullins. The plot frequently explores the challenges of civilian life for military veterans, the dynamics of small-town social circles, and the personal histories that residents attempt to leave behind.
As the seasons have progressed, the show has maintained a consistent focus on the evolving lives of its ensemble cast. The seventh season premiered on March 12, 2026, and the production has already secured a renewal for an eighth season as of July 2025. While the premise begins with a simple desire for a fresh start, the unfolding drama reveals that the residents of Virgin River are often bound by their pasts, secrets, and the complicated nature of their interpersonal connections.
