Born in Washington, D/C, in 1968, Lee Jae-yong was groomed from an early age to lead the Samsung conglomerate. After joining the company in 1991, he held specialized roles, including a uniquely created position as 'Chief Customer Officer.' However, his path to succession was complicated by the legal troubles of his father, Lee Kun-hee, who stepped down following tax evasion charges.
Lee's leadership was derailed by a massive influence-peddling scandal. In 2017, prosecutors accused him of offering roughly US$38 million in bribes to entities linked to a close friend of then-President Park Geun-hye. The goal, according to prosecutors, was to secure government support for a merger designed to consolidate Lee's control over Samsung during a period of family instability. This legal battle resulted in several convictions for bribery, embezzlement, and the concealment of criminal proceeds, involving sums as large as ₩8.6 billion.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Lee's legal saga saw significant shifts. After serving time, he was released on parole in August 2021, a move the South Korean government defended as being in the national interest. By August 2022, President Yoon Suk Yeol granted Lee a full pardon, citing Samsung's critical importance to the national economy. While he faced further scrutiny over accounting fraud allegations at Samsung Biologics, the Supreme Court of Korea eventually finalized his acquittal on those charges in July 2025.
