How a Broadway musical about a sorority girl became a global stage phenomenon
In short: Legally Blonde, the 2007 musical based on the novel and film, follows Elle Woods as she navigates Harvard Law School. Despite a rocky Broadway debut that failed to recoup its investment, the show found massive success in London, winning three Laurence Olivier Awards and outlasting its original American run.
The musical chronicles Elle Woods's journey from a Delta Nu sorority president to a successful law student. After her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III, breaks up with her to pursue a more serious reputation, Elle follows him to Harvard Law School. There, she faces skepticism from classmates and professors alike, eventually finding her footing by defending fitness icon Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial. The narrative emphasizes Elle's resilience and her refusal to compromise her identity, even when pressured to change her appearance or conform to traditional expectations of a lawyer.
The Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, opened in April 2007 at the Palace Theatre. It received seven Tony nominations but struggled with disappointing sales, closing in October 2008 after 595 performances. MTV famously integrated the show into its programming, filming a performance for television and producing a reality competition to cast the next lead, which Bailey Hanks won. Despite the Broadway financial disappointment, the show's creative team continued to refine the material, including reworking songs like 'Positive' and 'Ireland' during various development stages.
The West End production, which opened in 2010 at the Savoy Theatre, proved far more durable than its American counterpart. It ran for 974 performances and made history as the first West End show to implement a ticket lottery. The London run was critically acclaimed, securing the Best New Musical award at the 2011 Laurence Olivier Awards. The show's legacy continued through multiple national tours in the United States and the United Kingdom, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Elle Woods's story across different theatrical markets and demographics.
