In short: Formed in 1998 from the ashes of Choking Victim, Leftöver Crack is a New York City punk institution defined by radical politics and a persistent, often combative, relationship with authority. Their career is marked by label disputes, international travel restrictions, and a unique habit of performing under aliases to bypass bans.

The band emerged as a project for Scott Sturgeon, known as Stza, to release material that his previous group, Choking Victim, never recorded. The name itself is a self-described oxymoron, suggesting that crack cocaine users are too dedicated to their habit to ever have any leftovers. Based in Manhattan’s C-Squat, the band quickly established a reputation for political lyrics that vehemently oppose capitalism, religion, and the police. This confrontational stance led to a long-standing history of conflict with the NYPD, which has persisted since before the band’s official formation.

Their discography has been frequently interrupted by legal and logistical hurdles. Their first full-length album, originally titled Shoot the Kids at School, was blocked by Hellcat Records due to concerns over its controversial subject matter and artwork, particularly following the Columbine shootings. The band eventually released the album as Mediocre Generica in 2001, using the title as a jab at their label. Later, their second album, Fuck World Trade (2004), faced bans from major retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy for its provocative cover art depicting political figures during the World Trade Center attacks.

The band’s history is also defined by instability and creative evolution. They have navigated numerous lineup changes, including the tragic death of drummer Brandon Possible in 2004, and have frequently operated under the alias Crack Rock Steady Seven to circumvent venue bans in cities like New York. International touring has proven difficult due to members' criminal records, leading to repeated entry denials in Canada. Despite these challenges, the band has continued to experiment with their sound, incorporating elements of death metal, classical, and folk music, and in 2025, they signed to SBÄM Records to begin a new chapter with vocalist Tibbie-X.
