How one man built a pipeline to reshape the American Supreme Court for decades
In short: Leonard Leo, a long-time leader of the Federalist Society, orchestrated a sophisticated strategy to influence the federal judiciary. By cultivating conservative legal talent and managing massive fundraising networks, he became a central figure in selecting Supreme Court justices, ultimately playing an instrumental role in the 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade.
Born in 1965, Leonard Leo grew up in New Jersey, eventually attending Cornell University where he helped establish a Federalist Society chapter in 1986. After clerking for federal judge Arthur Raymond Randolph, Leo joined the Federalist Society’s national office in 1991. He transformed the organization into a powerful pipeline, recruiting law students and engaging them through practice groups and pro-bono networks to ensure a steady supply of conservative lawyers for the federal bench.
Leo’s influence expanded significantly through his work with Republican administrations. He assisted in the Supreme Court nominations of Clarence Thomas in 1991 and John Roberts and Samuel Alito in 2005. During the 2016 presidential election, Leo provided Donald Trump with a list of potential nominees, which helped secure support from conservative and evangelical voters. He subsequently played a critical role in the appointments of Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom were instrumental in the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Central to Leo’s success is his ability to raise vast sums of money through a network of nonprofits that do not disclose their donors. Between 2014 and 2017, his affiliated entities raised over $250 million. In 2021, his Marble Freedom Trust received a massive donation from electronics mogul Barre Seid, who transferred his company, Tripp Lite, to the trust. The company was later sold for $1.65 billion, with all proceeds directed to the trust. These funds have supported extensive media campaigns and advocacy efforts to advance conservative judicial appointments.
