The Prince of Albania who balances royal tradition with modern diplomatic service
In short: Born in South Africa and educated at Sandhurst, Leka Zogu represents the House of Zogu as its current head. His life bridges the gap between a defunct monarchy and contemporary Albanian statecraft, marked by a unique commitment to religious tolerance and a complex, evolving path through international diplomacy and public service.
Leka, born in 1982, is the grandson of King Zog I and the son of the late Crown Prince Leka. His upbringing was international, spanning South Africa and the United Kingdom, where he attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was recognized as the academy's Best Foreign Student. His academic and professional journey has been equally diverse, involving studies in Italy and Kosovo, alongside roles within the Albanian interior and foreign ministries. Between 2012 and 2013, he served as a political advisor to the Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, and was later rumored as a potential candidate for the 2022 presidential election.
The House of Zogu maintains a distinct approach to cultural heritage, particularly regarding Albania's tradition of religious tolerance. When Leka married Elia Zaharia in 2016, the ceremony featured a blessing from five religious leaders representing Sunni Islam, Bektashi, Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant traditions. This inclusive gesture underscored the family's historical role in fostering interfaith harmony. Though Leka and Elia divorced in 2024, the prince has continued his life in the public eye, marrying Blerta Celibashi in 2026 and welcoming a son, Prince Aleksandër, later that same year.
Beyond his political and personal life, Leka holds numerous titles and honors, including the Grand Master of the Royal Order of Skanderbeg and the Royal Order of Fidelity. His public duties have included representing the family at commemorative events, such as unveiling a plaque at Parmoor House in the United Kingdom, which served as King Zog's home during his wartime exile. Through his work, Leka navigates the legacy of a former royal house while remaining an active participant in the modern diplomatic and social fabric of Albania.
