How a church pianist became the architect of the modern Atlanta sound
In short: London Tyler Holmes, known as London on da Track, transformed from a teenager buying cheap beats online to a powerhouse producer shaping the Billboard charts. By leveraging his early musical training and strategic collaborations, he moved from giving away tracks for free to defining the sonic identity of modern hip-hop.
Born in Memphis in 1991 and raised in Atlanta, London Tyler Holmes developed his musical foundation playing piano and keyboards in church. This background proved vital when he began rapping at sixteen with the group Dem Savages. Faced with the cost of purchasing beats on SoundClick—where exclusive rights could reach $100—Holmes decided to produce his own music using online software. His early career was defined by a pragmatic approach to networking; he frequently gave away his beats for free to build connections and gain local recognition, eventually finding his first radio success with the Rich Kidz track 'Pieon'.
His career trajectory shifted significantly in 2011 when he began collaborating with Young Thug. This partnership provided a gateway into the industry, leading Holmes to sign as an in-house producer for Cash Money Records' project Rich Gang by 2014. Industry recognition followed rapidly; by August 2014, label boss Birdman declared him the best producer in the business. His influence was cemented that same month when he achieved the rare feat of having three singles—'Lifestyle', 'About the Money', and 'Hookah'—chart simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100.
Holmes has since expanded his reach far beyond his Atlanta roots, working with a diverse roster of artists including Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, and Ariana Grande. His 2020 production for Grande, 'Positions', marked a career milestone by debuting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and global charts. Beyond the studio, Holmes has appeared on television in 'Black Ink Crew: Chicago' and Netflix's 'Rhythm + Flow', and was recognized as a Spotify Secret Genius Ambassador in 2018. Today, he remains a central figure in music production, balancing his professional output with his life as a father of four.
