How Mac Miller evolved from independent mixtape sensation to major label chart-topping artist
In short: Mac Miller built a massive following through self-released mixtapes before dominating the Billboard charts. His career trajectory, marked by a transition from independent labels to major studio backing, showcases a rare artistic evolution. From his early viral hits to his posthumous chart success, Miller left a complex, enduring musical legacy.
Mac Miller began his professional journey by self-releasing various mixtapes before joining the independent label Rostrum Records in 2010. His initial commercial breakthrough arrived in 2011 with the extended play On and On and Beyond, which secured a position on the US Billboard 200. That same year, his mixtape Best Day Ever produced the single Donald Trump, which became his inaugural entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 and achieved platinum status from the RIAA.
The artist achieved a significant milestone in November 2011 when his first studio album, Blue Slide Park, reached the top of the Billboard 200. This feat was historic, as it marked the first time an independently distributed debut had claimed the top spot since 1995. Following this success, he continued to refine his sound, releasing the 2012 mixtape Macadelic and collaborating with Ariana Grande on the 2013 single The Way, which remains one of his most commercially successful tracks.
In 2014, Miller transitioned to a major label, signing with Warner Bros. Records. This shift preceded the release of several studio albums, including GO:OD AM, The Divine Feminine, and Swimming. Following his death in September 2018, interest in his work surged, leading to high chart placements for his existing catalog. His final studio project, Circles, was released posthumously in January 2020, achieving significant international chart success and providing a final chapter to his multifaceted discography.
