How a church-trained pianist became the architect of the modern trap sound
In short: Xavier Lamar Dotson, known as Zaytoven, transformed hip-hop by blending classical keyboard discipline with the gritty pulse of Atlanta street rap. From selling mixtapes out of car trunks to winning a Grammy, his journey reveals how a barber-turned-producer pioneered the signature aesthetic that defines contemporary trap music today.
Born in 1980, Dotson grew up immersed in church music, where he mastered the piano and organ alongside his three siblings. This formal foundation in melody and rhythm proved pivotal when he discovered rap in middle school. While living in San Francisco, he gained early access to professional studio equipment through a chance meeting with rapper JT the Bigga Figga at a high school football game. This environment allowed him to refine his production skills before his family relocated to Atlanta.
Upon moving to Georgia, Dotson financed his own home studio by working as a barber. His career trajectory shifted dramatically after meeting Gucci Mane, a partnership that defined the early 2000s Atlanta scene. The duo spent years distributing mixtapes independently until their 2005 single, Icy, brought them mainstream attention. This breakthrough paved the way for Dotson to collaborate with major industry figures, including Usher, for whom he produced the 2009 track Papers. His contributions to Usher's Raymond v. Raymond album resulted in a Grammy Award win in 2011.
Dotson's influence expanded through his work with artists like Migos, Future, and 21 Savage. He is widely recognized for shaping the trap genre, characterized by his distinct production style. Beyond his studio work, he has explored acting, appearing in the 2012 film Birds of a Feather and its 2018 sequel. In 2018, he further cemented his industry presence by joining the Creators Advisory Board of Tracklib, continuing to bridge the gap between traditional musical training and the evolving landscape of modern hip-hop production.
