In short: Before it was a global research leader, Louisiana State University was a small military academy with just nineteen cadets. Today, the institution drives billions in economic impact, yet its campus architecture and historic traditions still echo its 19th-century origins.

Founded in 1860 as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy, LSU's origins are deeply rooted in the American Civil War era. The institution opened near Pineville with only five professors and nineteen cadets, led by Superintendent William Tecumseh Sherman. The school's military heritage remains visible today through its nickname, "The Ole War Skule," and the display of two cannons donated by General Sherman, which were originally used during the firing on Fort Sumter in April 1861.

The university's journey through the late 19th century was marked by significant instability. After closing due to the Civil War, the seminary reopened in 1865, only to be burned in 1869. It eventually relocated to Baton Rouge, where it officially adopted the name Louisiana State University in 1870. Following the Morrill Act of 1862, the institution was restructured as a land-grant college, briefly operating in New Orleans before merging with the original university in 1877.

Modern LSU has transformed into a massive engine of economic and scientific activity. Classified as an R1 doctoral university with very high research activity, the institution manages over 70 master’s and 50 doctoral programs. In the past year, LSU recorded $601 million in research activity across its eight campuses, contributing to a $1.6 billion economic impact for the state of Louisiana. Beyond the laboratory, the university maintains a massive physical presence, with a main campus featuring over 250 buildings designed in the Italian Renaissance style of Andrea Palladio.
