A retractable roof that shifts the skyline in just eleven minutes
In short: Since opening in 2008, Lucas Oil Stadium has become a cornerstone of Indianapolis. Beyond being the home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, its massive retractable roof—composed of two 2.5-million-pound panels—can open or close in about 11 minutes, giving the home team control over the atmosphere 90 minutes before kickoff.
Designed by architectural firm HKS, the stadium was built to replace the RCA Dome and facilitate the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. The structure features a distinctive exterior of reddish-brown brick trimmed with Indiana limestone, a style shared by local landmarks like Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Hinkle Fieldhouse. This integration into the urban fabric is furthered by an underground walkway that provides a direct connection to the convention center. The facility's design was assisted by structural engineer Walter P. Moore. Its field surface was recently upgraded to Hellas Matrix Turf with geofill in 2024. This stadium has a seating capacity of 63,000 people.
The venue's versatility is evidenced by its diverse event history. While it serves as the primary home for the Colts, it has also hosted international soccer matches, such as the 2013 International Champions Cup game between Chelsea and Inter Milan. It has also become a significant hub for collegiate athletics, hosting multiple NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four tournaments, including those in 2010, 2015, 2021, and scheduled for 2026. The venue also accommodates various large-scale gatherings, such as the North American Youth Congress. It has served as a location for the Bands of America Grand National Championships.
The stadium's impact extends to specialized sporting events. In 2024, it hosted the United States Olympic Trials for swimming, drawing a crowd of 20,689—the largest gathering ever for an indoor swim meet. This success has prompted USA Swimming to plan a return for the 2028 trials. Additionally, the stadium has become a major venue for large-scale entertainment, hosting tours by artists like Taylor Swift and U2, and is slated to host future major events like WrestleMania. The stadium's naming rights were secured by the Lucas Oil corporation for $122 million over a 20-year period.
