The stadium that learned from its design mistakes to become something new
In short: When Toyota Stadium opened in 2005, its unique U-shaped design included a permanent concert stage. While intended to boost revenue, the feature eventually became an unpopular relic. Today, a massive $191 million redevelopment is transforming the Texas venue into a multi-use urban hub.
Originally known as Pizza Hut Park, the Frisco, Texas venue opened on August 6, 2005, with a 2–2 draw between FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls. Designed with a U-shape and a permanent north-end stage, the stadium was intended to host mid-sized concerts to diversify revenue. However, this design proved unpopular; other Major League Soccer clubs opted for different architectures, leaving Toyota Stadium looking dated compared to newer venues.
The stadium's evolution has been marked by significant shifts in both identity and scale. In 2012, the Pizza Hut naming rights expired, leading to the name FC Dallas Stadium before Gulf States Toyota Distributors secured the rights in 2013. A $55 million renovation in 2018 added a European-style roof to the south end and made the stadium the first league sports venue to house a National Soccer Hall of Fame within its walls.
Currently, the city of Frisco is overseeing a massive transformation branded as 'New Toyota Stadium.' This $191 million project, which includes unexpected repairs to the foundation as of 2026, aims to replace the unpopular north end stage with a new stand and install massive LED video boards. The project's final stage, due by 2028, will increase capacity from 20,500 to 23,900, adding 1.2 million square feet of office area, a 200-room hotel, and high-rise residential units.
The venue has hosted significant sporting moments, from the 2005 MLS Cup final to Lionel Messi's first away match for Inter Miami in 2023. It also serves as a training ground for international teams, such as Sweden during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though construction challenges—including a structural collapse in 2026—have complicated its ambitious transformation.
