The most powerful man-made light in the world shines over the Las Vegas Strip
In short: High above the Nevada desert, a concentrated beam of light pierces the night sky. It is the centerpiece of a massive black-glass pyramid, a structure so ambitious that its construction was marked by rumors of curses and intense regulatory battles.
The Luxor Las Vegas, a 30-story pyramid, is home to the world's largest atrium by volume. At its summit, the Luxor Sky Beam utilizes 39 xenon lamps and curved mirrors to project a single, intense beam of light. This system is so powerful that on clear nights, the light can be spotted by aircraft flying as far as 2/75 miles away, near Los Angeles. The heat generated by the lamps is extreme; the lamp room can reach 300°F, and temperatures as high as 500°F have been recorded just inches above the pyramid's tip.
The resort's history is one of grand scale and significant transformation. Originally developed by Circus Circus Enterprises with a $375 million investment, the project broke ground on April 21, 1992. While the exterior maintains its striking Egyptian theme—complete with a 106-foot replica of the Great Sphinx—the interior has undergone several major shifts. A $300 million expansion between 1996 and 1997 added two 22-story towers, increasing the room count significantly from the original 2,526 to over 4,400.
The transition from 'Project X' to a themed destination involved more than just architecture. To ensure authenticity, Egyptologists were hired to oversee the decor, which included fiberglass replicas of ancient artifacts. However, the heavy Egyptian theme has been intentionally scaled back over the decades. Following a 2005 acquisition by MGM, the resort moved away from immersive features like the indoor Nile River ride and the King Tut museum to adopt a more 'approachable' and modern middle-market identity, focusing on contemporary lounges, restaurants, and even the Strip's first esports arena.
