The unstable foundation and high-stakes origins of a Las Vegas icon
In short: Before it became a luxury South Seas landmark, Mandalay Bay nearly collapsed during construction. Uneven soil caused the building's core to sink 17 inches, triggering a crisis that threatened to derail its $950 million debut. Today, it stands as a massive 43-story complex, but its rise was anything but steady.
Developed by Circus Circus Enterprises, the resort was originally conceived as 'Project Paradise' to target high-end clientele. The project faced a significant engineering crisis in mid-1998 when the ground beneath the site began to settle unevenly. The building's core sank by 17 inches, while one wing settled only 2 inches, a discrepancy that caused rumors and depressed the developer's stock price. Engineers spent roughly $8 million to $10 million to secure the foundation by inserting 536 micropiles—metal tubes 200 feet long, filled with grout and topped with hydraulic jacks.
A major ceremony involving Bob Dylan and the Blues Brothers marked the resort's formal opening on March 2, 1999. The property was named after the city in Myanmar, drawing inspiration from the exotic romanticism of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'Mandalay.' While the resort offers a tropical theme, its history is marked by both luxury and tragedy. In October 2017, a lone gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor, killing 60 people at a nearby music festival in the deadliest mass shooting of its kind in the United States.
Today, the 120-acre complex is a major player on the Las Vegas Strip, managed by MGM Resorts International. It features diverse attractions, including the Shark Reef aquatic center and the Michelob Ultra Arena. The resort has undergone various ownership shifts, from MGM's acquisition in 2005 to Vici Properties acquiring MGM's stake in 2022, reflecting the complex financial landscape of modern mega-resorts.
