From Dublin to WWE: The rapid ascent of Irish wrestling star Lyra Valkyria
In short: Born Aoife Marie Cusack in Dublin, Lyra Valkyria transformed from a local independent wrestler into a decorated WWE champion. Her journey spans from training in Bray to headlining major international events, marking her as a significant figure in modern professional wrestling through her technical prowess and high-profile championship reigns.
Born on 23 October 1996, Aoife Marie Cusack grew up in the Clarehall neighbourhood of Dublin. Before her rise to global prominence, she studied journalism at Dublin City University and worked at a video game store. Her path to the ring began in 2014 when she started training in Bray, eventually refining her craft at the Fight Factory Pro Wrestling gym. She debuted in 2015 under the name Valkyrie, inspired by the protagonist of Derek Landy’s Skulduggery Pleasant book series.
Her independent career saw her compete across Europe, including stints with Westside Xtreme Wrestling and Pro-Wrestling: EVE, where she formed the tag team The Woke Queens with Debbie Keitel. After signing with WWE in 2020, she initially competed on the NXT UK brand before transitioning to the NXT brand under the name Lyra Valkyria. Her tenure in NXT was defined by a 165-day reign as NXT Women's Champion, which she secured by defeating Becky Lynch in October 2023.
Valkyria’s move to the Raw brand in 2024 propelled her into the main roster spotlight. She became the inaugural Women’s Intercontinental Champion in January 2025 and briefly held the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship alongside Becky Lynch. Her career has been marked by significant rivalries, including a complex partnership and subsequent feud with Bayley, and a high-profile series of matches against Lynch. Outside the ring, she remains engaged to fellow wrestler LJ Cleary, and her digital likeness has been featured in the WWE 2K video game series since 2024.
