The M79 grenade launcher was the Vietnam War's answer to portable infantry artillery
In short: Known as the Thumper, this break-action weapon gave soldiers a portable, accurate explosive punch that mortars could not match. While it eventually gave way to underbarrel launchers, its simple design and surprising range kept it in service for decades, proving that sometimes the most effective tools are the simplest.
Born from the US Army's Project Niblick, the M79 was designed to bridge the gap between rifle grenades and heavy mortars. By 1960, the Army had refined the S-5 prototype into the M79, officially adopting it on December 15 of that year. Its primary innovation was the High-Low Propulsion System, which allowed the weapon to fire a 40x46mm grenade while keeping recoil forces manageable for a shoulder-fired device. By 1961, the first units reached the field, where soldiers quickly dubbed it the platoon leader's artillery for its reliability and firepower.
The weapon's simplicity was its greatest strength and its most significant limitation. Composed of only five major parts, it operated like a large-bore, break-action shotgun. However, because it was a single-shot weapon, a grenadier could not maintain a constant volume of fire. This forced soldiers to rely on sidearms like the M1911 pistol in close-quarters combat, as they could not carry both the M79 and a standard rifle. While the M203 underbarrel launcher eventually replaced the M79 in 1969 by allowing soldiers to function as both riflemen and grenadiers, the M79 remained a specialized tool.
Despite its age, the M79 saw a resurgence in niche roles during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Special forces favored it over the M203 because of its superior effective range—350 meters compared to the M203's 150 meters. The weapon's versatility also allowed it to fire a wide array of ammunition, from high-explosive rounds that produced over 300 lethal fragments to non-lethal crowd control options like CS gas and sponge grenades. Even today, firms like Milcor and Denel Mechem continue to modernize the platform, proving that the Thumper remains a relevant piece of military hardware long after its Vietnam-era debut.
