In short: In 1982, the U.S. Armed Forces adopted a weapon to solve a critical gap in sustained fire. The M249 SAW brought the high rate of fire of a machine gun to the individual squad, blending the portability of an assault rifle with the devastating capacity of belt-fed ammunition.

The M249 SAW is an American adaptation of the Belgian FN Minimi, manufactured in South Carolina by FN America. Developed to address the lack of sustained automatic fire at the squad level, it replaced the need for troops to rely solely on rifles like the M16, which were prone to overheating and jamming during extended fire. The weapon features a gas-operated, air-encoded mechanism and a dual-feeding system, allowing it to use both belt-fed ammunition and standard STANAG magazines.

The development of the SAW was a complex, multi-year process. While the U.S. Army approved LMG development in July 1970, the specific 5.56 mm caliber was not finalized until later. In 1972, various contracts were awarded to laboratories like Rodman to create prototypes, such as the XM233, with strict weight requirements of under 20 lb. After testing several candidates, including the HK23A1 and the Colt M16 HBAR, the FN Minimi (designated XM249) was selected in May 1980 due to its superior performance and cost-effectiveness.

Despite its utility, the M249 has faced significant scrutiny. During the 1985 production suspension, issues like sharp edges and exposed hot barrels were identified. In later conflicts like the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, soldiers reported that the weapon was prone to clogging with sand and that 30% of users noted easy rusting. While 80% of surveyed soldiers in Afghanistan praised its lethality, only 64% expressed confidence in the weapon's reliability. As of 2022, the U.S. Army has selected the SIG Sauer M250 to eventually replace the M249.
