In short: From a powerful Intel-based tower to a controversial, cylindrical 'trash can,' the Mac Pro's history is a saga of engineering ambition and hardware limitations. Discover how Apple’s high-end professional line transitioned through radical redesigns before its eventual discontinuation in 2026.

The Mac Pro lineage began in August 2006, marking Apple's pivotal transition from PowerPC to Intel Xeon processors. The original model was a heavy-duty tower, derived from the Power Mac G5, featuring an aluminum chassis that was two pounds lighter than its predecessor. It offered significant internal expansion, including four 3.5-inch hard drive bays and multiple PCIe slots that could be configured to provide up to 13 GB/s of total throughput.

In 2013, Apple introduced a radical departure: a small, cylindrical design. This 'trash can' model was significantly more compact—one-eighth the volume of the original tower—but it came with severe trade-offs. The design eschewed internal expansion, making it difficult to upgrade GPUs or add storage. While its performance was lauded for 4K video tasks, the lack of expandability and the inability to upgrade hardware led to significant criticism. Some even compared its aesthetic to a rice cooker or Darth Vader's helmet.

The series eventually returned to a tower form factor in 2019, featuring a new thermal architecture with three impeller fans and up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots. However, the era of the Mac Pro officially ended on March 26, 2026. Apple discontinued the line, choosing to position the more compact Mac Studio as the successor for professional users, marking the end of a twenty-year era of high-end workstation computing.
