Why Sweden is buying French warships to defend its own coast
In short: Sweden is currently pivoting its naval strategy toward a fleet of four new frigates. In a move driven by rapid geopolitical shifts, the nation chose an existing foreign design over a domestic evolution to ensure they can get high-end maritime power into the water as quickly as possible.
The Luleå-class frigate represents a significant shift in Swedish naval doctrine. Originally, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) planned to develop 'Visby gen 2' corvettes—an evolution of their current fleet. However, the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and Sweden’s subsequent NATO application accelerated requirements for more capable vessels. By 2023, the program shifted from five smaller corvettes to four larger frigates, prioritizing extended sea endurance, increased size (over 120 metres compared to the Visby's 72 metres), and multi-domain capabilities like anti-drone operations.
To meet these urgent needs, Sweden entered a competitive bidding process involving three major offers: Naval Group’s FDI class, a collaboration between Babcock and Saab, and Navantia’s Alfa 4000-class. In May 2026, the Swedish government officially selected Naval Group to provide four ships based on the French FDI design. The primary driver for this decision was speed of delivery; by choosing an existing architecture rather than a 'clean sheet' domestic design, Sweden can commission the first two ships by 2030 and the remaining two by 2035.
While the hulls will be built in France by Naval Group, the vessels will be deeply integrated with Swedish technology. They will feature Swedish sensors like the Giraffe 1X radar and weapons such as the Robot 15 and Torped 47. To enhance aerial protection, Sweden is modifying the French FDI blueprint by replacing the usual Oto Melara 76 mm cannon with a Bofors 57 mm variant, plus adding MBDA CAMM-ER missiles and a Bofors 40 mm gun.
