In short: In 2017, Apple released a machine that looked like a consumer desktop but packed workstation-grade power. It was a strategic bridge—a high-performance compromise designed to fill a void left by a controversial redesign, eventually becoming a symbol of what the Mac Pro might have been.

The iMac Pro emerged in June 2017 as an interim solution for professional users. Following the 2013 launch of a cylindrical Mac Pro—a design Apple later admitted was a mistake due to its small size and GPU focus—the company hosted a roundtable promising a return to professional commitment. While a new tower was being developed, the iMac Pro was released in December 2017 to serve as an all-in-one alternative for those who needed more power than the consumer Mac Mini or iMac could provide.

Despite its professional internals, including Intel Xeon-W processors and AMD Vega graphics, the iMac Pro shared nearly the same chassis as the 27-inch iMac. This design choice was a double-edged sword: critics praised Apple for fitting such high performance into a svelte frame while simultaneously criticizing it for inheriting consumer flaws like wide bezels and hard-to-reach ports. It also lacked expansion options, requiring full disassembly for memory upgrades and an Apple Configurator restore to replace the user-replaceable SSD.

The machine's legacy is defined by its niche status. While some reviewers noted that a standard iMac could provide significant performance for much less money, others saw it as a vital statement of intent. It was eventually discontinued in March 2021, replaced by the Mac Studio and a revised Mac Pro. Today, it is often remembered as a unique technological pivot—a 'pro' machine that occupied a space between consumer aesthetics and workstation capabilities.

From a technical standpoint, this model introduced multiple innovations, debuting as the initial Mac equipped with an Apple T2 chip for storage encryption and system management alongside a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port. It offered a unique a la carte upgrade path where each component could be configured independently, a rarity at the time.
