How a national flag carrier transformed from two planes into a global aviation player.
In short: Established in 1974 with just two Boeing 737s, Royal Brunei Airlines has spent five decades navigating rapid expansion, fleet modernization, and shifting global markets. From historic long-haul endurance tests to earning world-leading cabin crew accolades, the airline remains a central pillar of Brunei’s connectivity to the rest of the world.
Royal Brunei Airlines began its journey on 18 November 1974, launching its maiden flight from the newly constructed Brunei International Airport to Singapore in May 1975. Initially operating with two Boeing 737-200s, the carrier quickly expanded its regional reach to cities like Manila and Bangkok. By the mid-1980s, the airline entered a new era of long-haul capability with the acquisition of Boeing 757-200s, enabling routes to Taipei and Dubai. A significant milestone occurred in June 1990, when the airline completed a historic 18-hour non-stop flight from Seattle to Nairobi, covering over 14,800 kilometers and earning a place in The Guinness Book of Records.
The airline’s history is marked by cycles of ambitious restructuring and strategic consolidation. In 2002, CEO Peter Foster initiated a plan to grow the fleet significantly, introducing Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft to replace older models. This period also saw the introduction of the SkyDreamer seats in Business Class, though the airline later faced challenges with profitability, leading to the suspension of various routes, including those to Frankfurt and Sydney in the late 2000s. By 2013, the airline revitalized its international operations by introducing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, to serve long-haul destinations like London Heathrow.
Today, the airline is recognized for its service quality, receiving a Five Star rating from the Airline Passenger Experience Association in 2023 and being named World's Leading Cabin Crew by the World Travel Awards for four consecutive years. Beyond its operational milestones, the airline has maintained a distinct cultural presence through special liveries, including those commemorating the 40th anniversary of operations in 2014 and the Golden Jubilee of the 29th Sultan of Brunei in 2017. As of 2024, the fleet continues to evolve with the addition of 50th-anniversary decals, reflecting the airline's enduring role as the flag carrier of Brunei.
