The $1.00 campus that was once a US Army hospital
In short: Long before it became a sprawling Los Angeles charter school, this 53-acre campus served a very different purpose. From a wartime military hospital to a site for global music videos, the history of Birmingham High School reveals a fascinating transformation of land and identity.
The site currently occupied by Birmingham Community Charter High School in the Lake Balumn area has a lineage rooted in military service. From August 24, 1943, until March 31, 1946, the land functioned as Birmingham General Hospital, a US Army facility. The hospital was named in honor of Brigadier General Henry Patrick Birmingham, a figure associated with the US Army Medical Corps during World War I. Following the war, the facility transitioned to the Birmingham Veterans Administration Hospital, serving veterans until 1950.
The transition to education began in 1952 when the Los Angeles City Schools purchased the hospital property for just $1.00. When the school officially opened in 1953, it functioned as a combined 7–12 grade institution, catering to families from the East Coast and Midwest who were settling in the San Fernando Valley. By 1963, the institution had restructured to become solely a senior high school.
The school's evolution has been marked by significant structural and social shifts. Following months of internal disagreement among staff, the institution formally became Birmingham Community Charter High School in 2009. This era also saw the emergence of the Daniel Pearl Magnet High School on the same campus. While the school has faced challenges, including debates over racial discrimination and mascot changes—moving from the 'Braves' to the 'Patriots'—it remains one of the largest campuses in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
