In short: Manhattan Beach was once a landscape of uneven sand dunes, but today it hosts some of the most valuable property in the United States. Beyond its transformation from a sandy expanse to a high-end coastal enclave, the city holds a complex history of land development, racial exclusion, and unexpected global connections.

The physical geography of Manhattan Beach has been radically altered since its early days. Much of the city sits atop leveled sand dunes, a massive engineering project carried out by the Kuhn Brothers Construction Company during the 1920s and 1930s. In a strange twist of global commerce, some of this excess sand was shipped across the Pacific Ocean to transform the reef-heavy shores of Waikiki, Hawaii, into a sandy beach over a decade-long period.

The city's social history is equally marked by significant shifts. In the early 20th century, Bruce's Beach served as a pioneering resort for Black Americans, offering bathing suit rentals and showers. However, the area became a target for the Ku Klux Klan and local authorities. In 1924, the city utilized eminent domain to seize the land under the guise of park development, a move widely viewed as a pretext to exclude Black residents. It was not until 2021 that the state of California authorized the return of the property to the family's descendants.

Today, Manhattan Beach is defined by its extreme real estate value and affluent demographic. The city features distinct neighborhoods like the 'Hill Section' and the 'Sand Section,' where properties along 'The Strand' command some of the highest prices per square foot in the nation. With a median household income estimated at $193,904 in 2023, the city remains a hub for high-profile individuals in sports and entertainment, drawn by its moderate climate and proximity to Los Angeles.
