In short: When Maria Elena Santiago met Buddy Holly in 1958, he famously told his bandmates he would marry her within minutes of their introduction. Their whirlwind romance ended in tragedy just five months later, but Santiago-Holly spent decades fighting to protect the intellectual property and financial rights of her late husband.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Maria Elena Santiago moved to New York City in 1953 to live with her aunt. While working as a receptionist at the music publisher Peermusic, she encountered Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Their relationship moved with remarkable speed; after a first date on June 19, 1958, Holly proposed marriage just five hours later. The couple wed on August 15, 1958, in Lubbock, Texas. Their time together was brief, ending on February 3, 1959, when Holly died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, alongside Ritchie Valens, Jiles Perry Richardson Jr., and pilot Roger Peterson.

The aftermath of the tragedy was profound. Santiago-Holly, who was two weeks pregnant, suffered a miscarriage the day after learning of the crash from television news. The incident prompted authorities to change official policies regarding the disclosure of victim names to ensure families were notified first. Santiago-Holly later married Joe Diaz, with whom she had three children, though she maintained that Holly remained the love of her life. She eventually divorced Diaz, citing his inability to accept her enduring devotion to her first husband.

As the owner of Holly's name, image, and trademarks, Santiago-Holly became a fierce protector of his estate. In 1999, she joined Holly's siblings in a lawsuit against MCA, alleging the company had defrauded the heirs of royalties and stolen recordings. The legal battle concluded in 2007 with a court-ordered settlement of $251,325 in additional royalties. Beyond legal disputes, she has dedicated herself to his memory, co-founding The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation in 2010 with Peter Bradley to provide musical education to new generations. Despite her lifelong commitment to his legacy, she has stated she does not intend to be buried beside him.
