In short: Created by Timothy Zahn for the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire, Mara Jade evolved from an Emperor's assassin into a Jedi Master and Luke Skywalker's wife. Despite her popularity and status as a foundational figure in the Expanded Universe, she remains excluded from the modern Star Wars canon.

Mara Jade was conceived by author Timothy Zahn to address a perceived lack of complex female characters in the Star Wars universe. Introduced as a smuggler's lieutenant, her backstory revealed she was once an Emperor's Hand, a special agent conditioned by Palpatine to assassinate Luke Skywalker. This psychological hold, rooted in a fabricated vision of Luke and Vader conspiring against the Emperor, defined her early arc. She eventually broke free of this conditioning, turned against the Empire, and became a central figure in the New Republic era.

The character's journey saw her transition from a reluctant student to a Jedi Master. Her relationship with Luke Skywalker developed over several series, culminating in their marriage and the birth of their son, Ben. Zahn, who maintained creative control over her appearances, viewed her as a sharp, sarcastic counterpart to Princess Leia. Her narrative concluded in the Legacy of the Force series, where she was killed by her nephew, Jacen Solo, after discovering his descent into the Sith path. She later appeared as a Force ghost in subsequent stories.

Following Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm, the vast majority of licensed novels and comics, including those featuring Mara Jade, were reclassified as Legends and removed from the official canon in April 2014. While other characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn have successfully transitioned into the current canon, Mara Jade remains sidelined. Zahn has expressed a desire to reintroduce her if a natural narrative opportunity arises, but he has stated that Lucasfilm currently bars writers from using the character in new works. Despite this, she remains a fan favorite, consistently ranking among the top Star Wars characters in various critical lists.
