Marvin Vettori: The Italian Middleweight Who Redefined Endurance in the UFC Octagon
In short: Born in Trento, Italy, Marvin Vettori emerged from a landscape where MMA gyms were scarce to become a formidable UFC contender. Known for his relentless pace and technical grit, Vettori has secured his place in history through sheer volume, consistently ranking among the division's most active and durable fighters.
Marvin Vettori’s journey into mixed martial arts began at age 13 with kickboxing, eventually leading him to pursue professional MMA in 2012. Facing a lack of specialized facilities in Italy, he trained across six different gyms before moving to London and later the United States to join Kings MMA. His rigorous routine involves six days of training per week, typically split into morning sessions focused on striking with coach Rafael Cordeiro and evening sessions dedicated to wrestling, cage work, and conditioning.
Since his UFC debut in 2016, Vettori has established himself as a high-volume striker. He currently holds the third-highest record for total strikes landed in the UFC Middleweight division at 1,687, and the third-highest for significant strikes at 1,274. His style is defined by durability and stamina; he possesses the third-longest average fight time in the division at 16 minutes and 42 seconds, and the fourth-most total fight time, clocking in at 4 hours, 43 minutes, and 47 seconds.
Vettori’s career has been marked by both high-stakes championship opportunities and personal challenges. In 2018, he faced a six-month suspension after testing positive for ostarine, though the United States Anti-Doping Agency later confirmed the substance originated from a contaminated supplement rather than intentional use. Beyond the cage, Vettori has navigated significant personal loss, including the 2025 death of his younger brother, Patrick. Despite these hurdles, he remains a decorated athlete, having earned multiple Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night honors throughout his tenure in the promotion.
