From Guns N' Roses to moon bear advocacy: the versatile career of Matt Sorum
In short: Matt Sorum is a prolific American drummer whose career spans iconic hard rock bands and diverse creative projects. Beyond his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sorum has navigated the music industry as a collaborator, solo artist, and activist, consistently reinventing his role within the global rock scene.
Born in 1960, Matt Sorum began his drumming journey after watching Ringo Starr perform on television in 1964. His formative years in Mission Viejo, California, involved playing in school jazz and marching bands before he moved to Hollywood to pursue professional music. After early work with artists like Tori Amos, his career trajectory shifted significantly in 1990 when he was recruited to replace Steven Adler in Guns N' Roses. During his seven-year tenure, he recorded three studio albums and performed on the extensive Use Your Illusion Tour, which spanned 194 shows and reached over 7 million fans.
Sorum's departure from Guns N' Roses in 1997 followed a confrontation with Axl Rose regarding band personnel. He subsequently returned to The Cult and co-founded the supergroup Velvet Revolver with former bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan. The band achieved critical success, winning a Grammy Award for their single Slither. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Sorum expanded his reach, participating in various supergroups like Hollywood Vampires and Camp Freddy, while also exploring technology and philanthropy. He launched the distributed-ledger platform Artbit in 2018 and co-founded Adopt the Arts in 2012 to support elementary school arts programs.
His interests extend well beyond the stage. Sorum has become a vocal advocate for animal welfare, specifically working with Animals Asia to support moon bears rescued from bile farms. His personal life and professional endeavors remain intertwined, from his marriage to Ace Harper in 2013 to his ongoing work as a musician and ambassador. Whether filling in for Motörhead on tour or mentoring aspiring musicians on reality television, Sorum maintains a multifaceted career that defies the traditional boundaries of a rock drummer.
