From Michigan theater stages to the multiverse of DC superheroes
In short: An American actor’s journey spans from small-town Michigan premieres to playing iconic villains in the DC multiverse. Discover how a chance meeting with a Hollywood veteran helped launch a versatile career in film, television, and classical theater.
Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1970, Matt Letscher’s professional trajectory began in the American Midwest. While studying drama at the University of Michigan, he secured his first professional role at Jeff Daniels' Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea. The connection with Daniels proved pivotal; the veteran actor not only facilitated a meeting with director Ron Maxwell but also provided the guidance that eventually led Letscher to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue television work.
Letscher’s career is defined by a striking versatility, moving between high-concept genre roles and classical stage performances. He has inhabited the role of the villainous Captain Harrison Love in The Mask of Zorro and portrayed the complex Eobard Thawne, also known as Reverse-Flash, in the DC television universe, specifically in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. His filmography also includes notable appearances in Spike Jonze's Her and the true-crime drama Devil's Knot.
Beyond acting, Letscher has established himself as a playwright and director. In 2007, his original farce, Sea of Fools—which features film director Elia Kazan as a character—premiered at the Purple Rose Theatre Company. His writing credentials include the comedy pilot Gentrification, which earned a best writing award at the Comedy Central New York Television Festival in 2010. Whether performing in the Lincoln Center production of The Rivals or playing Carrie Bradshaw's father in The Carrie Diaries, Letscher remains a fixture of both contemporary television and classical theater.
