The social hierarchy of high school, staged for the Broadway stage
In short: Based on a 2004 film and inspired by a 2002 book, the Mean Girls musical transforms teenage social warfare into a rock spectacle. From the 'Plastics' clique to the infamous Burn Book, the production explores the complexities of fitting in and the cost of social royalty.
The musical adaptation of Mean Girls follows Cady Heron, a girl who spent her life homeschooled in Africa before transferring to a public high school. Upon arrival, she is drawn into the orbit of 'the Plastics,' a clique of wealthy, insecure girls led by the 'queen bee' Regina George. The group includes Gretchen Wieners, the nervous second-in-command, and Karen Smith, described as a stereotypical blonde. The story follows Cady as she navigates the pressures of her new environment. She eventually faces a dilemma when she must decide whether to join the Mathletes to improve her grades. This decision highlights her struggle between her academic identity and her newfound social status.
The production's journey began in Washington, D.C., where it held pre-Broadway tryouts at the National Theatre in 2017. It officially premiered on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre on April 8, 2018. Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, the show was produced by Lorne Michaels and Stuart Thompson. The musical received a mix of positive and critical reviews and earned twelve nominations at the 72nd Tony Awards, including a nod for Best Musical. The musical's creative team includes music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. It was inspired by Rosalind Wiseman's book about teenage social dynamics. Additionally, a film version of the musical was released in early 2024.
The narrative centers on the social maneuvering required to navigate high school, including the use of a 'Burn Book'—a collection of mean comments and photos about classmates. The story reaches a climax when the book is leaked, causing chaos among the students. The Broadway production eventually closed on March 11, 2020, after 833 performances, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. By January 2020, the show had successfully recouped its initial capitalization. The plot involves a revenge plot against Regina involving Kälteen Bars. This scheme aims to cause the queen bee to gain weight. The tension escalates when the contents of the Burn Book are distributed throughout the school.
