In short: Inspired by a real-life documentary, this stage musical follows sixteen-year-old Jamie New as he navigates bullying and family rejection to embrace his identity. Beyond the glitter of his drag persona, the story explores the complexities of parental support and the courage required to step into the spotlight at prom.

The musical is based on the true story of Jamie Campbell, a British schoolboy who faced prejudice while pursuing his ambition to become a drag performer. The narrative begins in a classroom where Jamie reveals his aspirations to his teacher, Miss Hedge, who dismisses his dreams as unrealistic. At home, Jamie finds a source of strength in his mother, Margaret, though their relationship is strained by secrets regarding his father, who rejects Jamie's identity and refuses to acknowledge him as a son.

Central to Jamie's journey is his discovery of the local drag scene through Hugo, a shop owner who mentors him under the persona Loco Chanelle. This mentorship allows Jamie to develop his own drag identity, Mimi Me. The plot navigates the tension between Jamie's desire for self-expression and the harsh realities of school bullying and societal expectations. A pivotal moment occurs when Jamie is physically assaulted, leading to a reconciliation with his mother and a renewed determination to attend his school prom in a dress.

The production has seen international success since its 2017 premiere at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. It has been adapted for stages in South Korea, Japan, Italy, Mexico, and the United States. The musical's score, originally written for an eight-piece band, has been performed by various casts across global tours. Despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced closures and cancellations of several scheduled runs, the show has maintained a significant cultural footprint, concluding its West End revival in March 2024.
