The man who walked away from television's greatest sitcom
In short: McLean Stevenson achieved superstardom as Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake in M*A*S*H, but he chose to leave. Driven by a desire to be the lead star rather than part of an ensemble, his departure triggered one of the most emotional exits in television history.
McLean Stevenson's career was defined by a high-stakes gamble. While he was a talented comedian and writer, his tenure on the legendary sitcom M*A*S*H proved to be his zenith. Despite the show's massive popularity, Stevenson grew frustrated with playing a supporting role to Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce. He famously told co-star Loretta Swit that he had to leave the ensemble to become number one, even though he suspected he would never find work of such high quality again.
The decision to exit the series during its third season led to a dramatic narrative conclusion. In the final episode of the 1974–1975 season, titled "Abyssinia, Henry," his character was discharged from the military, only to perish when his plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan. To ensure the cast delivered authentic grief, the writers distributed the scripts for this tragic development only after the actors had seen them.
The aftermath of his departure was a period of professional decline. Stevenson attempted to launch several solo projects, including the 1975 NBC special "The McLean Stevenson Show," which finished 41st in the ratings. His subsequent sitcoms, such as "Hello, Larry" and "Condo," struggled to find an audience and were largely dismissed by critics. He eventually admitted that leaving the series was the biggest mistake of his career, noting that he had never again worked with scripts or talent of that caliber.
