The rise of male separatism and the ideology of going their own way
In short: In an era of digital fragmentation, a growing community of men is choosing to withdraw from romantic relationships entirely. Driven by a belief that modern society is fundamentally rigged against them, the MGTOW movement advocates for a life of self-reliance, far removed from the influence of women.
Men Going Their Own Way, or MGTOW, is an anti-feminist community that advocates for male separatism from what members describe as a 'gynocentric' society. Emerging in the early 2000s, the movement's roots can be traced to early sites like the 'No Ma'am' blog, which published its 'MGTOW Manifesto' in 2001. While early members were often politically libertarian and focused on individual self-reliance, the movement's focus has since shifted toward a more radical rejection of marriage and committed relationships.
The movement operates through various levels of engagement. At the first level, men recognize what they call 'situational awareness' or being 'redpilled' but may still value marriage. As they progress, they move toward rejecting long-term partnerships, then short-term relationships, and finally to a state known as 'going ghost,' where they minimize engagement with both the state and society. This ideology is part of the broader 'manosphere,' a collection of online groups including incels and pick-up artists, though MGTOW is distinct in its rejection of women entirely.
Despite their claims of total withdrawal, research suggests a complex relationship with the very group they seek to avoid. A 2020 study by Scott Wright and colleagues found that 59% of MGTOW forum posts mentioned women, with 61% of those mentions being misogynistic. Researchers suggest this may be a way for members to perform their rejection of women to maintain group belonging. The movement has faced significant scrutiny; the Southern Poverty Law Center categorizes MGTOW as part of the male supremacist ideology, and Reddit banned the r/MGTOW subreddit in August 2021 for violating policies against promoting hate and violence.
