In short: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are not your average crime fighters. Living in a retirement home, these elderly humans gained their aquatic powers through a bizarre kitchen mishap involving overcooked popcorn. Voiced by legends Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway, they remain iconic figures of campy, Silver Age-inspired superhero satire.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy first appeared in the SpongeBob SquarePants universe on August 21, 1999. Within the show, they are genuine superheroes residing at Shady Shoals Retirement Home, though they are often depicted as semi-retired. Mermaid Man, known as Ernie Huckler, struggles with memory and hearing loss, while his sidekick, Tim Stangler, known as Barnacle Boy, is characterized by his irritable and brooding nature. Despite his age, Barnacle Boy is frequently treated with a juvenile, coddling attitude that fuels his frustration.

The characters serve as a deliberate homage to the campy aesthetic of the 1960s Batman television series. This connection was cemented when Adam West and Burt Ward, the original stars of that series, voiced younger versions of the duo in the episode Back to the Past. The show's creators, Stephen Hillenburg and Derek Drymon, specifically sought out Borgnine and Conway for the roles due to their shared history on the 1960s sitcom McHale's Navy. Hillenburg famously described Borgnine as the most animated person he had ever encountered.

The duo's origin story is as unconventional as their personalities. According to the episode Mermaid Man Begins, they were granted their aquatic abilities after leaving a microwave on too long, which caused their popcorn to overcook. Consuming this snack supposedly triggered their powers. However, the show hints that this version of events may differ from the duo's own memories. Following the deaths of Ernest Borgnine in 2012 and Tim Conway in 2019, creator Stephen Hillenburg made the executive decision to retire the voices, relegating the characters to non-speaking cameos to honor the original performances.

Borgnine, who died at age 95, famously improvised the character's signature yell of Evil! when his voice cracked during a recording session. The production team decided to keep the take, cementing a defining trait of the character. Today, the duo exists as a massive franchise within Bikini Bottom, appearing in comic books, trading cards, and even kids' meals at the Krusty Krab.
