How an eight-month casting search launched a German-Turkish star to international fame
In short: Meryem Uzerli became a household name after being selected from an exhaustive search to play Hürrem Sultan in the hit series Muhteşem Yüzyıl. Her journey from minor German roles to Turkish television stardom highlights the unpredictable nature of international acting careers and the intense demands of high-profile historical dramas.
Born in 1982 to a Turkish father and German mother, Meryem Uzerli grew up in Kassel, Germany, attending a Waldorf school. Her early career consisted of minor appearances in German television series like Notruf Hafenkante and Ein Fall für zwei, as well as films such as Journey of No Return. Her trajectory shifted dramatically at the end of 2010 when screenwriter Meral Okay and producer Timur Savcı selected her for the lead role in the historical drama Muhteşem Yüzyıl following an eight-month search for the perfect actress.
The role of Hürrem Sultan required Uzerli to relocate to Istanbul, where she lived in a hotel for two years during production. Her performance earned her a Golden Butterfly Award for Best Actress in 2012. However, the intense schedule took a toll; in 2013, she departed the series citing health concerns, specifically burnout. The production continued with Vahide Perçin stepping in to portray an older version of the character, illustrating the precarious balance between artistic success and personal well-being in the industry.
Since her breakout, Uzerli has navigated a diverse career across film and television. She starred in projects like Gecenin Kraliçesi, which filmed in locations ranging from Cannes to Rize, and the 2019 film Kovan, where proceeds were donated to the Ahbap foundation. Her recent work includes the 2024 series RU, which was renewed for a second season, and promotional work for Turkey’s tourism initiatives. Beyond acting, Uzerli has maintained a presence as a model for various international brands, continuing to build an international profile that spans multiple industries and platforms.
